Mayor Ken Sim: Pipelines are Federal; Vancouver Will Stay Focused on Vancouver

VANCOUVER, October 1, 2026 — Following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement that the West Coast Pipeline, now known as Pacific Link, has been designated as a National Infrastructure Project, Mayor Ken Sim responded by saying ABC Vancouver supports any project that builds a more independent Canada by opening up new markets, attracting domestic investment, and diversifying trade partnerships.

At the same time, Mayor Sim emphasized that City Hall will not get involved in the file. “Vancouver is the Pacific gateway for our country,” said Mayor Sim. “We support a Canada that sells to the world, not one that waits for permission. And being a gateway city sometimes means getting out of the way. As long as I’m Mayor of this city, I have no intention of launching frivolous lawsuits against companies or the federal government who are creating jobs and economic opportunities in Canada. I have no intention of using City lawyers or high-priced law firms to try to block a pipeline that doesn’t even touch Vancouver city limits.”

Mayor Sim added that the City will continue to work with all levels of government on priorities within Vancouver: building and restoring community centres that families use, swimming pools that teach kids life-saving skills, roads that don’t damage cars, and sidewalks seniors can walk on safely.

“That is the work ABC put on the table: restore what people use every single day, instead of chasing national fights we cannot win,” said Mayor Sim. “To be clear, I support a strong and resilient Canada.”

On Monday, October 5, Mayor Sim and ABC Vancouver will launch the Vancouver Agenda, outlining how they will work with all levels of government to do more for Vancouver and what they will do in their first 100 days in office.
