Statement from Mayor Ken Sim and the ABC Vancouver Team
Vancouver, B.C. — Mayor Ken Sim and the ABC Vancouver team are echoing the concerns raised today by UBCM President Cori Ramsay regarding the possibility of a snap provincial election overlapping with local government campaigns already underway across British Columbia.
“Vancouver’s civic election period begins September 19, with voting day on October 17,” said Sim. “Our candidates, our residents, and our city need to be focused on the issues that matter here at home, not caught in the middle of a snap provincial campaign. British Columbia has separate election cycles for a reason. That principle shouldn’t be set aside because of political timing.”
“Now is the time for stability, not more uncertainty. Vancouver residents are dealing with real challenges: housing, public safety, and the toll of the addiction and mental health crisis on our streets. What we need from Victoria isn’t an election call. We need Premier Eby and his government to move forward with the voluntary and involuntary treatment capacity this province so urgently requires. That work can’t wait, and it shouldn’t be delayed by an election.”
“We’re asking the Premier to respect the local election period the same way past provincial governments have, and to keep the focus where it belongs: on delivering real solutions for people in Vancouver and across B.C.”
