We’ve invested in a series of initiatives to build vibrant communities. We’re focused on uplifting neighbourhoods and enhancing road infrastructure, community amenities and public spaces to create a world-class city and prepare us for decades to come.

Investing in our Amenities

We approved a $139M increase to the $3.5 billion 2023-2026 Capital Plan to maintain and renew our city’s aging amenities and infrastructure.

Funding for road maintenance, pothole repairs, street cleaning, horticulture, transportation safety and accessibility improvements, and expanding the cycling network.
Broke ground on a new 42,000 square foot Marpole Community Centre.
Approved a bold plan for Moberly Park that includes a new turf field, walking track, spray park and field house.
Reopened Kits Pool for Summer 2024.
Supported a new plan for the renewal of the Britannia Community Centre.
Supported further amenities and investments in underserved neighborhoods across South Vancouver.
Increased funding to the Vancouver Public Library and the Children’s Library.
Committed funding to our Civic Theatres to support arts and culture events.

A New Era for Parks and Recreation

Vancouver’s parks, recreation services and cultural assets are prized by Vancouverites and visitors alike and must be protected, maintained and preserved indefinitely for future generations. We’re working to transition the governance of parks and recreation services from a separate, elected Park Board to Council.

Helps us manage these spaces more effectively and efficiently.
Brings us in line with best practices used in every other city in Canada.
Increases the number of designated permanent parks in Vancouver.
Strengthens protections of parks to ensure they’re protected for generations to come.

Strengthening Community Events and Programs

Lifted the moratorium on new commercial event initiatives in parks to support more events and festivals, and approved a number of new events across the city.
Implemented the ‘Think Big’ Revenue strategy to expand revenue opportunities in parks.
Created a new park, ‘Gibby’s Field’, in East Vancouver.
Approved a concept plan for a new Park at Main and 7th.
Approved the like-for-like repair of the Jericho Beach Park Pier, and directed staff to prepare to receive donations from the community to advance this project.
Directed staff to develop a strategy to plant 100,000 trees by 2026.
Fixed the Stanley Park Train in time for Christmas 2023.
Removed the temporary Stanley Park bike lane and restored pre-COVID traffic and parking.
Directed staff to study and plan for new, permanent, dedicated cycling infrastructure in Stanley Park.
Approved one-time funding of $4.9M to begin immediate work required to mitigate the safety risk of trees damaged by the Hemlock Looper Moth within Stanley Park.

Cultivating a Sense of Pride

We’re attracting events and building spaces that create a buzz of energy, excitement and opportunity that will boost the economic and cultural vibrancy of Vancouver.

Created the city’s first Special Events Taskforce, dedicated to promoting diverse events.
Amended the Arts Events License Policy and relevant by-laws to increase the frequency of events allowed each month.
Implemented an Alcohol on Beaches Pilot Program.
Participating in the Cultural Tourism Event Fund Partnership to support major events and festivals, and attract out-of-town visitors.
Getting ready to host FIFA World Cup 2026, one of the largest events in the world.
Upgrading Killarney Park & Memorial South Park to be official training sites for the World Cup.
Attracted Web Summit Vancouver, which will welcome tech leaders and innovators from around the globe.

Enhancing Spaces & Places

We’re revitalizing our community hubs to reflect the diversity and energy of our city.

Opened a Civic Office in Chinatown, representing an integral link between the City and Chinatown.
Launched the Uplifting Chinatown Action Plan, which has included more than $3.4 million in grants.
Approved the Chinatown Cultural District Framework to support economic and community development.
Approved the West End Community Hub Renewal Plan, which includes the renewal of the West End Community Centre, Joe Fortes Branch Library and King George Secondary School.
Launched the Granville Street Planning program to help to re-establish Granville as an exciting, welcoming, safe and inclusive downtown destination.
Launched the Gastown Public Spaces Plan, which includes upgrades to Water Street and a pedestrian pilot program.
Launched the Villages Planning Program to create complete, walkable neighbourhoods across the city.
Allocated funds to hire a Seniors Planner to ensure that planning reflects the needs of our Seniors.
Advocated for the creation of a Filipino Cultural Centre with senior government partners.
