ABC Statement on the Fall City Council Agenda

VANCOUVER, BC – As we look forward to the resumption of council meetings next week, Vancouverites can look forward to a renewed focus to deliver on our ambitious 94-point ABC platform which received an overwhelming endorsement from voters.

We know families are facing challenges in our city in accessing both housing and childcare, and it will take concrete action to deliver results for the people who call Vancouver home. This fall, we will be bringing forward new ideas to tackle the issues families are facing in this city.

That’s why Vancouverites will see Mayor Ken Sim and the ABC majority led council continue to make housing in Vancouver a priority. We know that for our city to thrive, we need housing that is attainable for the people who live here. Ultimately, we know that we need to build more housing faster in Vancouver.

That’s why we will continue to ensure it is easier to build housing this city needs, while removing barriers that are holding back projects – both big and small. That includes helping to eliminate barriers facing childcare operators. We know many childcare operators across our city are predominantly women, and we acknowledge the important opportunity which exists to empower these entrepreneurs as they deliver this vital service.

Already, this past December, Councillors from ABC Vancouver took action to address the need for more childcare in this city. One of our first actions was seeking to harmonize our childcare regulations with the province of British Columbia – to streamline the process and make it easier to build childcare in Vancouver.

We know for Vancouver to be a vibrant city, it needs to be a city where families can live, work and thrive. Mayor Ken Sim and the ABC majority led council are committed to delivering on our promises to help make this city all it can be – and that starts with making sure we’re building the homes Vancouver needs.

We recognize Vancouver hired this team to build A Better City – something that cannot be done without housing and childcare.
